Classic Bookshop - Book Review - Used and Rare: Travels in the Book World by Lawrence and Nancy Goldstone

Review by Daniel Foster

Used & Rare by Lawrence and Nancy Goldstone is a remarkable achievement. It made me fall in love with books all over again. Part memoir, part travel log, part literary archaeology, the Goldstones take us on a remarkable journey through the world of used and not so used books as they, at first, restlessly hunt for affordable hardcovers of their favorite authors, later escalating to finer and more expensive first editions. Along the way they provide us with stories behind some of the famous and not so famous books and authors, from Charles Dickens to H. P. Lovecreaft. We also meet a wide variety of people in the book business, from the snobby to the eccentric.

Simply put, Used & Rare is the best book St. Martin's Press has published, or will publish, this year. Highly recommended to all booklovers!
