Review by Daniel Foster

I have anxiously awaited the arrival of Sacred, Dennis Lehane's latest novel, all summer. Mr. Lehane is the best new author I have read in the past five years. He won the Shamus Award for best P.I. first novel for A Drink Before the War. His follow up book, Darkness, Take My Hand, now available in paperback, proved every bit as good. Sacred does not disappoint.

Private Investigators Patrick Kenzie and Angela Gennaro, after closing their office following the events in Darkness, are uniquely approached by dying billionaire Trevor Stone. Offering them $20,000 just to hear him out, Stone requests them to locate his missing daughter, and sole heir, Desiree, who is still grieving over the recent death of her mother. He also reveals that Patrick's former mentor, Jay Becker, was originally hired for the task, but that he, too, has disappeared without a trace. Futhermore, Becker's firm unceremoniously dumped Stone as a client a week after his disappearance. Picking up where Jay Becker left off, Patrick and Angela begin "untangling the tangles, sniffing the scent," that leads them down a twisted trail of half truths, corruption, and hidden agendas where no one is what they seem.

Sacred is an outstanding novel. Mr. Lehane successfully weaves an intricate plot, credible characters, wit and humor, relentless suspense, and wonderful writing into another excellent book in an evolving series. Highly Recommended!
