Classic Bookshop - Book Review - The Gravity of Shadows by David Ramus

Review by Dan Foster

Wil Sumner is clawing his way out of ruin. His gallery is gone, and his former partner has departed for parts unknown with a large amount of money not his own, leaving Wil to fend off the debt collectors alone. When he receives an offer to appraise the collection of a wealthy Palm Beach art collector and businessman, he leaps at the opportunity, a chance of a lifetime to get back into the game he mastered for so long, the bloodsport of art dealing. However, even with all his experience, Wil has never seen a collection quite like the one Andrew Stevenson has locked away in his vault. Questions surface in Wil's mind. Why would Stevenson want to sell such a staggering collection of art? What are his motives? When an intruder breaks into Stevenson's mansion demanding a file no one has ever heard of, violence erupts, leving Stevenson hospitalized and his wife dead. The Palm Beach police view Wil as the prime suspect. Unable to see Stevenson, Wil launches his own investigation, one that leads him into a web of hidden agendas, deadly alliances, and long buried secrets dating back to the Spanish Civil War. Exposing the truth may cause the biggest political scandal in Florida, if it doesn't kill Wil Sumner first.

David Ramus delivers a solid sophomore effort. The Gravity of Shadows is a terriffic novel, hitting on all cylinders, vivid characters, local color, intrigue plotting with plenty of suspense to spare, and an insider's perspective of the art world not commonly seen by outsiders. David is a gifted storyteller. Make sure you add The Gravity of Shadows to your summer reading list.
