Classic Bookshop - Book Review - Rose Cottage by Mary Stewart

Review by Brian McClosky

In the summer of 1947, Kate Henrick is a London war widow still trying to rebuild her life. In addition to the grief of her husband's death 5 weeks earlier she receives a surprisingly large inheritance. For the first time, this daughter of a housemaid is searching for ways to occupy her time. A seemingly simple errand for her ailing grandmother leads Kate back to the village and the life she left behind. Here bitter-sweet childhood memories come flooding back. Old friendships are renewed; but all the while she is haunted by memories of her mother's disappearance and questions about her father's identity.

Rose Cottage is a moving family saga with a little mystery mixed in. Anglophiles will love the vivid portrayels of village life and the eccentic characters who populate Strathbeg Valley.
