An admitted bibliophile I make no apologies for my passion. Books about books are a favorite of mine, novels and mysteries set in the book world immediately grab my attention. John Dunning set the standard for these with his mystery novel Bookd to Die. However, he has not written the best example of this unique literary nich: that honor goes to Arturo Perez-Reverte for his marvelous novel The Club Dumas. Now available in trade paperback from Vintage, The Club Dumas is a book worth reading.
Lucas Corso is a mercenary of the book world, a sharp-eyed quick-thinking hunter tracking down rare and exotic books for unscrupuous yet very wealthy book dealers and private clients. One such person, convinced his copy is a forgery, hires Corso to find the original copy of The Book of the Nine Doors to the Kingdom of Darkness, a legendary occult text on summoning the Prince of Darkness. Supposedly only one copy survived the bonfires of the Inquisition, yet three are known to exist. As Corso pursues leads throught Europe's cut-throat antiquarian world, he encounters a secret society of book dealers, occult practitioners, and a woman who may be a protector or predator, landing on the trail of a mysterious killer who may write the last chaper of Corso's life.
Beautifully written, The Club Dumas is a wonderful gothic thriller, dark, moody, tightly plotted and throughly engrossing, with adventure straight out of a Dumas novel. Perez-Reverte delves deeply into the world of old books, exploring and sharing the passion booklovers have for their collections. What makes The Club Dumas so extraordinary is the fact it was translated into english without losing any of it's style or atmosphere.
Highly recommended, I urge you to immediately buy this book!
